The Democratic Primaries were hotly contested in 1968 (and even saw the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy). Vice-President Hubert Humphrey emerged the victor, but eventually lost to Republican Richard Nixon who also defeated American Independent candidate George Wallace in the General Election.
